Rivalon is ruled by a single monarch. A new King, Queen, or Sovereign would usually be crowned by the Coven of the Lake. The Coven is made up of thirteen witches whose methods of choosing leaders is clandestine and secretive. All that is known is that if the witches agree then a new leader is given the Crown of Rivalon and the throne. Rivalon is the only province in Orathos to not have a discriminator between upper, middle, and lower classes.
The Quisling 'Queen'
Rivalon's main villain is Laewendas.
Laewendas had always chosen to live an honorless life. She was power-hungry and self-serving at every corner. She would steal from manors and blame the maids, poach others lands and claim the beasts attacked her, and her punishments to those who served her were cruel and unusual. Only one thing was a constant for Laewendas - she was always the blameless victim.
'Queen' Laewendas seized the throne in 1357. She murdered the rightful King Aethelric with his own sword. She put upon her own head the crown, presented the court with his severed head, and sat in his throne. Those honorable that day were slain and many traitors bent the knee to the false queen.
Laewendas carved Rivalon into pieces and sold its territories and its tribute collections to marauders, bandits, and other sycophants. The fears throughout Rivalon are that she could not have acted alone. Someone from within the castle, someone trusted by King Aethelric, must have betrayed him. Laewendas must be the first to fall.
