0E: Prehistory
Nothing is known of pre-history. It is theorized that this era ended when various species of intelligent life developed. It is estimated that the period of prehistory could be multiple millions of years. There is no way to know as scrying magic cannot see so far back.
1E: First Era - The Era of the Ancients
Intelligent creatures began to develop language to communicate. Small communities independently discovered concepts such as animal domestication, farming, and cooking. The First Era lasted for tens of thousands of years. Records from this time are sparse and require careful translation due to the lost languages involved.
2E: Second Era - The Era of Magic
The existence of magic was discovered. This enabled communities to expand and explore. No longer were people chained geographically to farmland as magic could conjure food for travelers. Two druids casting goodberry twice a day could keep an exploration force of forty people fed and watered. The Era of Magic ended when there was no more unexplored land to discover.
3E: Third Era - The Era of Kings
The Era of Kings represented a shift from exploration and discovery to assault and defense. This was an era of war, conquest, and crowns. Societies rose and fell and many were lost to history. One society, born under The God-Emperor, conquered most of the known lands. He wished to rule uncontested so he killed other gods and burned their religious texts and places of worship. The Era of Kings ended when the God-Emperor was slain and the world was freed from his iron fist. With the collapse of the Final Empire a new era was born.
4E: Fourth Era - The Current Era
The game is set in 1396. Almost 14 centuries have passed since the fall of the God-Emperor. Elven children of today know stories from their grandparents about the horrors of the old empires. With them in mind, new nations and societies are tentatively testing the waters.
Timeline of Events
The early history of Orathos and its original inhabitants is unknown due to damage caused by the Final Empire.
4E - 0: Godfall. The God-Emperor is slain, the empire collapses, and his stranglehold over Orathos collapses.
4: Orathos declares itself an independent island nation. Anyone with previous empire employ is exiled.
100: Bael'Drakkor in Baelheim is paid his first tribute.
666: The Voivode of Veilwood signs a treaty with Hell.
704: Atollia's population booms. It divides its rulership into a Mainlander and an Islander representative.
976: The Firebrands are established.
1300: Bael'Drakkor's most recent tribute is paid.
1332: The Veilwood's Curse first appears.
1357: Kingfall. The rightful and honorable King Aethelric is murdered by Laewendas.
1358: Laewendas and Aethelric's son-in-law Haelric engage in a brutal war. Haelric is assassinated.
1360s: Several large skirmishes break out across the nation. Pirates and marauders sack Atollia and Laewendas divides Rivalon amongst bandits.
1360s: Refugees begin to flee Orathos.
1369: The last chartered refugee ship safely leaves Orathos. Anyone left behind is trapped.
1373: In Varia, Amelia Bloodworth seizes control of her family noble house. Not one relative survives.
1376: Varia takes in large numbers of Orathi refugees.
1381: Varia's five shires are united under Amelia Bloodworth. Four willing, one by force. She is crowned High Queen of Varia.
1393: Varia sends an exploratory test mission to Orathos. It does not return.
1395: The reclamation pact is signed and stamped between all 4 factions. The Orathi Militia, Varia, the Firebrands, and the Mage's Society. The reclamation effort establishes a foothold in Rivalon.
