Crocolion
What — A ~20-ft magically intelligent crocodile-lion hybrid spellcaster that lurked in the river at Ponterford; a King Ringo bounty target (100g) that turned out to be eating children's bodies as they floated downriver. (Session 34)
Threat — High. Bounty said "big crocodile," but it was a lip-reading spellcaster with death-rolls and a 50-damage aerial slam — far deadlier than its 100g bounty implied against the ~level-6 party. (Session 34)
Observed abilities
- Bite, +7 to hit — ~11–12 piercing/bludgeoning hybrid damage; auto-hit on a target already in its mouth. (Session 34)
- Death Roll — on a successful bite-grapple, target makes a STR save; ~7 force-type damage and expels all air from the lungs (drowning rules if the target can't breathe water). (Session 34)
- Claw swipe / Tail swipe — multi-attack; claw dealt ~5 slashing and can crit. (Session 34)
- Silt Feed Frenzy — one attack against every creature within melee range. (Session 34)
- Extreme Buoyancy (self-cast) — makes itself violently rejected by water, quadrupling its depth as upward launch; combined with the party's winch it rocketed ~80 ft and slammed down as an "aerial missile" for 50 damage to the grappled target and ~40 (halved on a Dex save) to others nearby. Identified only by a spellbreaker as a near-theoretical spell. (Session 34)
- Silt Cloud — stirs riverbed silt with its tail for concealment while submerged. (Session 34)
- Natural armor buff — a Barkskin-like "toughen up" self-cast (not Mage Armor). (Session 34)
- Blink — teleports ~30 ft to disengage and flee. (Session 34)
- Bait spell — deliberately casts a throwaway spell first to draw out a Counterspell before its real one — fights as if every PC has Counterspell. (Session 34)
- Reads lips; can hold its breath ~30 minutes. (Session 34)
Resistances / immunities / weaknesses — None innate observed. Practical defense came from environment: while ~15–20 ft submerged in silt cloud, ranged attacks that "hit" (e.g. an 18, 24) were negated or halved by water cover. Out of the water it lost that cover and took full hits. (Session 34)
Tactics & behavior — Highly intelligent ambush predator. Hides submerged in silt, takes bait, grapple-bites and death-rolls. Plays the long game with spells; at 1 HP it abandoned the fight entirely (bait spell → natural armor → Blink → flee overland) rather than swing — "it wants to live more than anything." GM noted it could have escaped had it fled toward water instead of land. No observed fear of Fenric specifically, though Fenric (a spellbreaker) was the only one able to identify its magic. (Session 34)
Disposition to the party — Hostile (a hunted bounty). Took Lash as bait-grapple and inflicted the bulk of the party's damage. No parley; purely predator/prey.
Status — Dead. Dropped to 1 HP, fled via Blink, and killed by a long-range arrow from Jex while escaping through the trees (Session 34). Party kept its head and hide as trophies; bounty collected. ⚠️ The party flagged that Speak with Dead on the head could let it talk/conspire — the trophy is a loose end.
Gaps — Total HP never stated (only "~85 left" mid-fight); AC never stated numerically; the Crocolion's own spell save DCs were never given (the only DC in play, 16, was Jex's Stinger). Session attribution: this is from the Session 34 transcript, but it is elsewhere recorded as Session 35 — numbering may be offset; verify before citing externally.
