Session 04 — Fight Night at The Urina
Session Recap
Fight night in The Urina, the sewer arena beneath Port Quaybay — and the debut of Silithane (Johan's pale elf sword-mage), who woke up in the arena's Jail Cell 1 alongside John the Jailer, whom the rival adventuring group had locked in his own jail. Fenric accidentally freed the jailer, and Silithane chose the prisoner's deal — fight to the death in the arena or rot — then won his freedom on a technicality by casting Sleep on the beloved slime champion Goopo before a single blow was thrown. The rest of the card went the party's way too: Lash ("The Hammer") killed the fat banjo prisoner and won Lash's Magic Hammer; Fenric drained a necromantic Shadow Priest dry of spell slots and beat him to death, earning protective vambraces; Magra and Ashlyn ("Blood and Thunder") pulled off the 2-v-4 upset; and Silithane drew blood in a "Minute to Hit It" exhibition against the arena's Atollian grand champion to win back his own sword, Sir Grape.
Around the fights, the party worked the room. Kain converted a cowardly gladiator (and his wife) to the Firebrand Church, gave little Goopo Jr. a boot to live in, and pulled the middle lever to free Handsome Jane — while Goopo Jr., trying to help, booted the jailer unconscious and kicked the wrong lever, releasing Laila, the dread-radiating woman from the Veilwood whom the Rat King keeps re-kidnapping as a fight prize (she left peacefully, nodding only to Fenric). Fenric used the jailer's keys to raid a back-room inventor's study for crafting schematics; Thalia collected paid letters bound for Orathos; Silithane conned Mean Claude into trading a claw-machine prize for a "magic" butter knife — the Knife of Ooze Spreading — which turned out to genuinely work; and Lash went home with the smitten Brebo Goldfang. Jane was reunited with Handsome Jack above ground at sunset. The party rested at the Big Barrel (Kain at the church); the boat to Orathos leaves tomorrow night.
Key Events
- Before the descent: the party swung by Scrawbles to report on the debt-collection job and tipped him off so he could dodge the tax enforcer Taximus Maximus; Lash picked up a child-sized ghillie suit from the coalition hunter Venturi before heading down into the sewers.
- Silithane's debut: woke in The Urina's jail with no memory beyond falling through an open sewer grate in Port Quaybay while heading for the Orathos expedition. The Rat King had dragged him in ("You either fight in the arena or you go to jail"). His cellmate: the jailer himself, locked in by the rival adventuring group (their shapeshifter impersonated him — Mia vouched, her other group did it).
- Fenric wandered into the unlocked jail, pulled a lever, and freed the jailer by accident; agreed not to tell the Rat King the door was unlocked. Silithane opted to fight in the arena — to the death, as a prisoner — and accepted the rules (fight in the pit; hit a spectator and "they send in the dog"; no running). Fenric lent him his never-used copper short sword.
- Kain spent an hour escorting a cowardly gladiator to the Firebrand Church, then converted his "mindless" wife too. Later gave Silithane a 15-minute theology lecture on the All-Flame Queen — and Silithane sensed Kain is no ordinary Branded; "he's got to be something else."
- The four arena bouts (see below); the Rat King granted prizes after each: "Name your prize" — magical artifact, gold, a prisoner, or me (he blushed).
- Goopo Jr. turned up looking for his dad; Lash had scooped the sleeping Goopo into a vial, which Kain uncorked to restore him at full size. Kain gifted the boy his one huge boot (he now bounces around inside it) and faked being knocked out by the kid's boot-kick, selling it with pretend self-immolation.
- Goopo Jr., emboldened, later booted the jailer out cold ("Fire, Kain!") and kicked the levers at random — releasing Laila from the pitch-dark far cell instead of Jane. She spared the unconscious jailer (Kain offered him as a sacrifice), gave Fenric a respectful nod and a Vale-slang greeting, extinguished the kitchen lights with a glance, and slipped out — saying she'll sneak aboard tomorrow's boat to get home to the Veilwood.
- Kain pulled the middle lever and freed Handsome Jane (in the cell about six hours after falling down a grate herself). Introduced her to "the idiots"; reunion hug with Jack above ground at sunset.
- Fenric took the KO'd jailer's keys and opened the locked back room: an inventor's study (machinery, schematics, shopping lists of gyrochronometers) shared with a second Shadow Priest, whom he bluffed as a food-delivery man ("2 food, please"). Stole two crafting schematics for Lash: a semi-automatic crossbow and springy boots.
- Thalia ran courier business: a letter from "Mean Kord" at the arena desk to a recipient in hiding in Orathos (double fee, stamped recipient-pays — nonpayment is "a federal crime"; 1 gp up front), and a letter from Mean Diesel to his brother Mean Claude for when Claude reaches Orathos (1 gp).
- Silithane's con: slammed his prison butter knife on Mean Claude's desk as the "Butter Knife of Ooze Spreading," backed by an Arcana-laced sales pitch. Thalia faked a rival bid ("5 mints — in secret," hands over her ears); Claude won with one claw-machine play plus a dusty bottle of sewer wine. The claw (d100: 43) yielded the War Machine Club. Then Claude spread a chair two-dimensionally across the floor — the knife actually works.
- Lash played Conquest (the trading card game) with Brebo Goldfang, who gave her a water starter deck; she bet a gold coin, won one game of three, and he returned change anyway (9 silver, 9 copper). Her nat-20 insight: "This guy wants to f— you." She spent the night at his above-ground manor; next morning he took her shopping and bought her a deluxe +1 bedroll.
- Evening: the party (minus Lash and Kain) bunked at the Big Barrel — three rotating overhead ale barrels with dangling self-serve taps, free for expedition members; barracks bunks with other people's sweat outlines (Magra's despair). Kain slept at the church, where Magra got dramatic Warbrand faith-healing after some sermons.
- Church check-in: the cowardly gladiator and his encouraging wife attend night sermons; the tall Ljorstud ("tall as always") stocks the unreachable top shelves; Little Bub declined; the pink-mohawked orc charity lady spent hours listening — a promising convert.
- Departure prep: Varia's government is footing the bill to gear the expedition — the GM invited supply requests during the week ("once you're at the island, the freebies stop"). Thalia was offered a fresh courier bag (she's attached to her tatty one). Lash will fletch Magra's bolts.
Combat & Encounters
Silithane vs. Goopo (prisoner death match)
- Goopo entered to wild cheers — high-fives all round, a bow to the Rat King — then Silithane won initiative and cast Sleep, angling the radius vertically (bottom of the circle on Goopo, up through the ceiling — also flooring a few people in the hallway above). Goopo slumped into a puddle.
- The crowd booed; the Rat King ruled: "As a technicality, the prisoner wins. You have won your freedom." Silithane never got to use his plan (ink in the eyes, then the cutlery). Lash bottled the puddle in a vial.
Lash "The Hammer" vs. the banjo prisoner
- Lash front-flipped into the pit (landed on hands and knees; salvaged it with a hammer slam). Her opponent: the fat prisoner with the one-string guitar, playing his lone D# down the steps.
- She learned hammer physics — the harder you swing, the harder it bounces back off a belly — cracked his thigh, whiffed a flying head-slam (rolled a 1, flipped clean over him), then chose the killing blow. "Murder number 2, let's go!"
- Prize: a green magic warhammer — The Hammer. Lash. Unbloodied. Untouched in the Urina. Veteran gladiators assumed she was a sandbagging professional. (The bout had been booked non-lethal in Session 3; nobody told Lash's bloodlust.)
Fenric vs. the Shadow Priest
- A limping shadow priest summoned two skeletons through the wooden arena floor and buffed one red. The crowd: "Shado Priest! Shado Priest!" — and the priest's subterranean-dwelling father figure moment: the priest is revealed as the proud father of Gravis, the "not-a-necromancer" shipping a coffin above ground (the same goblin-like smuggler the party met alongside Handsome Jack in Session 3) ("Has he finally done it, my son? Is he a necromancer now?" "He always was!" — Gravis reportedly summoned 12 zombies).
- Fenric ignored the skeletons, tanked the opportunity attacks, and carved into the caster — each hit breaking a spell slot (his Spellbreaker craft; he flavored it as nerve-strike pressure points, but for magic). Took 8 necrotic from an Inflict Wounds grab (black handprints now shine wrong against his fur) and beat the priest until "he's empty" — possibly the first time he's drained a caster to nothing — then ran him down and finished him.
- The employerless skeletons wandered off to watch the fights until their animation expired. Prize: protective vambraces (anti-slash/sword).
Magra & Ashlyn ("Blood and Thunder") — the 2-v-4
- Opponents: Gord and Warb (the legendary shoe-tying arguers), an armored orc Pit Gladiator with a two-handed axe, and Pancat, an off-duty town guard with a sap.
- Gord clubbed and stabbed Magra (5 dmg); Magra steadied her crossbow on her shield and took his head off in one shot. Warb hit Ashlyn for 1+1; her Hellish Rebuke left him at 1 HP, and her public vampire bite drained him dry — half the crowd ecstatic, the other half retching into buckets.
- Ashlyn soulbound Pancat: when he sapped her, he hurt himself equally, couldn't comprehend it ("stop hitting yourself"), and surrendered out of the pit.
- The Pit Gladiator's crit (8 slashing) would have dropped Magra — orcish Relentless Endurance kept her up at 1 HP, twice over by fight's end. Ashlyn re-soulbound the gladiator and stabbed herself for 8 (living voodoo doll; his own orc 1-HP trigger fired in shock), and Magra's final bolt downed him. Upset complete; the Rat King applauded.
- Prizes: vambraces each (bulk discount). A friend stabilized the gladiator with CPR; nobody mourned Gord and Warb ("they argued about shoes too much").
Silithane — "Minute to Hit It"
- One minute, ten swings, against the smug blue Atollian grand champion (capoeira footwork, sea-monster-tooth necklace, no armor) who doesn't strike back. Silithane's third swing (24) nicked a paper-cut of blood down the man's chest.
- The champion shook his hand: "Where did you train?" "Veilwood, of course." "Ah, my brother from another coast." Prize: Silithane's own confiscated sword, Sir Grape — an agile longsword (finesse d8), which Mean Claude had honorably set aside for him.
NPCs & Factions
- Rat King — man-pile-sized arena boss; flanked by rat assistants (one counting money, one popping boils). Prize menu: artifact, gold, a prisoner, or himself. Retired to bed through a secret door behind the throne — beyond which a woman was glimpsed doing dark magic (the "scary mage" teacher Fenric never got to fight).
- Goopo & Goopo Jr. — the crowd-favorite slime champion and his bouncing son ("Are you talking to me or my son?" — an in-joke from Ryan's old campaign). Both chose to stay in The Urina; the boy now lives in Kain's boot and believes he KO'd both Kain and the jailer.
- John the Jailer — freed, then booted unconscious by Goopo Jr.; offered to a "demon" by Kain; survived. His keys enabled Fenric's schematic theft.
- Laila — new: the dread-radiating Veilwood woman kept in the lightless far cell as a recurring kidnapped "prize." Respects only Fenric; extinguishes lights with a look; intends to stow away on the party's boat.
- Handsome Jane — freed from the middle cell; reunited with Handsome Jack.
- Mean Claude — ran the sign-up/prize desk (sharp teeth, ghoul-grey); booked Silithane's exhibition; lost the bidding war he won (the knife is real); is himself sailing to Orathos to break the legs of fled debtors.
- Mean Diesel — Claude's jacked, tattooed brother; announcer/boxer ("I just box" — non-lethal, tomorrow afternoon); sent a letter ahead to Claude via Thalia.
- "Mean Kord" — grey, gangly mail customer at the arena desk (name uncertain — possibly Mean Claude misheard, or a third Mean brother).
- Brebo Goldfang — mouse (60% sure) at the trading-card desk; runs the arena gambling ring; the only sewer dweller living above ground. Lash's new flame.
- Hairy Joe ("Scary Joe") — lifelong door guard with a litter-picker extendo arm; guards the secret passage to the Rat King's throne.
- Ricky Reed — the abs-forward gladiator (fashion leather, not function); mean-mug standoff with Magra; squat-team abs investigation confirmed Magra is genuinely jacked.
- The Shadow Priests — two: the arena combatant (Gravis's father, killed by Fenric) and the scroll-writer sharing the inventor's study.
- Venturi — coalition hunter who gifted Lash a child-sized ghillie suit before the party descended into the sewers.
- The Atollian grand champion — unnamed; pristine, capoeira showman.
- Firebrand Church — recruitment ledger: cowardly gladiator + wife in, orc charity lady promising, Little Bub out. Free healing for sermon-sitters; teeth cleaning included.
Locations
- The Urina — explored in full: jail wing (Cell 1, Cell B, Cell Blue — the Rat King's naming), the misspelled "Jail, do not enter" door, lever wall, the fighting pit (10 ft deep), viewing platform/throne, prize cages, the kitchen stewing the arena's dead, the inventor's study, and the throne's secret passage.
- Port Quaybay — emerged from a different grate at sunset by the coast, in sight of the expedition ship. Big Barrel inn (north): rotating ale barrels, free military barracks bunks.
- Brebo's manor — above ground with a sewer-ladder basement entrance; private bar, gaming table; Lash's lodging.
- Orathos — departure is tomorrow night; Silithane was born there (left ~30–40 years ago) and trained in the Veilwood — making Veilwood origins the party majority. Atollia noted as the champion's home coast.
Loot, Items & Rewards
- Lash's Magic Hammer — green prize warhammer (her first green item) — Lash.
- Protective vambraces ×3 (guard vs. slashing weapons) — Fenric, Magra, Ashlyn.
- Sir Grape (agile longsword, finesse d8) reclaimed + Fenric's copper short sword + War Machine Club (claw-machine greatclub that parries on its own — cursed or shoddily enchanted) + dusty ancient sewer wine — Silithane.
- Knife of Ooze Spreading — traded away to Mean Claude; genuinely magical.
- Schematics: semi-automatic crossbow & springy boots — Fenric, earmarked for Lash.
- Conquest water starter deck + 9 silver 9 copper + deluxe +1 bedroll — Lash.
- Child-sized ghillie suit — gift from the coalition hunter Venturi — Lash.
- Two paid letters for Orathos delivery (2 gp collected) + offer of a fresh courier bag — Thalia.
- A boot (now housing Goopo Jr.) — given away by Kain.
Decisions & Open Threads
- The boat to Orathos sails tomorrow night. Supply/gear requests to be messaged during the week — Varia pays until the island, then freebies stop.
- Laila plans to stow away on the party's boat; nobody objected.
- Thalia carries two letters to deliver in Orathos — one to a recipient "in hiding" (double fee due on delivery), one to Mean Claude, who'll be there breaking debtors' legs.
- The dark-magic teacher behind the Rat King's throne was glimpsed but never confronted — Fenric's wished-for mage fight didn't happen.
- The War Machine Club is either cursed or a rush job — and Silithane can't wield it; it wants "someone a bit thuggish."
- Fenric holds two crafting schematics to hand to Lash.
- Goopo Jr. now believes he can KO grown men ("I've convinced the kid he's more powerful than he should have any right to believe" — "that's dangerous").
- No payment was ever discussed for rescuing Handsome Jane — the party freed her anyway ("we don't get paid for that").
- The rival group's fish lady was left in the sewers, cronked out on parrot; Kain and Fenric joked about kidnapping her ("3 hours in the future she's okay").
- Magra's hand is dead for two hours after meeting Ashlyn's high-five energy.
- Lash's romance with Brebo Goldfang: he's promised more big-spender shopping before departure.
Memorable Moments
- Casting Sleep vertically through the ceiling to avoid the spectators — and dropping bystanders in the hallway 40 feet up.
- The Rat King's prize menu ending in "...or me," with a blush — and the realization that the other group "never fucked the Rat King."
- Fenric entering the sewers to find Handsome Jane, seeing her in the prison, and still picking the artifact.
- "Murder number 2, let's go!" — Lash splatting the banjo man mid-whimper, then being mistaken for a sandbagging professional.
- The wheelbarrow guy rolling out a giant warhammer for "the hammer" prize, seeing tiny Lash, and quietly wheeling it back out.
- Gravis's father's pride sparkling at the rumor of 12 zombies — moments before Fenric beat the last spell slot out of him.
- Goopo Jr. hurling the glass vial of his dad at the floor — dink — "glass bottles are a lot stronger than anyone thinks they are."
- Pancat sapping himself via Soulbind, then surrendering to Ashlyn's American-cop routine ("Do a Rubik's Cube! Stop resisting!").
- Three people squatting to investigate Magra's abs (verdict: genuinely jacked; Ricky's are fashion leather) while Silithane smugly diagnosed "projective geometry."
- The secret-bid war: Thalia bidding 5 mints with her hands over her ears; Claude scattering extra dust on the wine to sweeten the deal; the chair spread into two dimensions.
- Lash booing the victorious Silithane as he walked past: "That was boring. What even happened?"
- The jailer's post-release power walk — keys jingling, club tapping — "a lot less imposing after he got himself locked in."
