Valmora
Player: Neko · Member of The Shattered Coin (joined Session 23)
A tall (~6'2") woman with white hair and large raven-like wings whose span reaches well above her head, wearing a raven-feathered cloak over her armor and decked in small trinkets, ribbons and scraps of cloth of many origins braided into her hair. She carries a round shield and a lantern filled with chainless amulets of long-forgotten gods — a "dead lantern" with no flame, symbolic of the dead gods she venerates (though she can cast Light to make it shine).
A 5th-level cleric (~93 HP) and a formidable talker — her Diplomat/persuasion is her best tool and strength her worst stat, a vulnerability she dreads against the grabbing, fling-happy Grabblers. Spells seen: Spirit Guardians, Shield of Faith, Ray of Enfeeblement, Dispel Magic, Thaumaturgy, Light. She normally wears a custom flight scale-mail (built for wings) that is currently damaged and needs a town forge plus ~125 gold to repair. Aligned with the Reclamation (carries a Reclamation Signet).
Her quest: to recover relics of the dead gods — items of lost religions and lost history from before the final empire — which she believes lie buried beneath the Grey Vale Cave. Her vow: to live once and die once; she refuses resurrection. Her mother "was not kind to her."
Her past (Session 26): a celestial, she was raised in a shrine/temple that hoarded the knowledge of the faiths from the "unworthy" and whose matron commanded her to kill all trespassers. Valmora refused and kept failing, and was banished — a mercy, she feels, that let her see the wider world. She was married for 50 years to a human of Orathos (met by chance, "enemies to lovers") who longed to return and restore his homeland to peace but couldn't, and died peacefully; she travels in his stead to keep that promise. He crafted many of the amulets on her lantern, gifting her one each new year — relics she now shares rather than hoards.
(Name heavily garbled by transcription — "Valmora," "Valmora," "Valmora," "Valmora," "Valamor," etc.; "Valmora" is the GM's deliberate rendering. Neko also controls a second token, Eleanor, of unconfirmed nature.)
Session 23 (debut)
- Introduced camped at the mouth of the Grey Vale Cave, blocked by the chasm and the hand-monsters in the pit, biding her time for help to arrive.
- Talked a Suggestion-bewitched Guilford out of walking off the cliff, stalled him for hours until the charm broke, and walked him back toward the tavern — then, meeting the party, persuaded them to spare the wheat-hair lyncher entirely, urging him to seek help and atone.
- Joined the party, revealed her dead-gods quest and her live-once vow, and flashed her Reclamation signet.
- Bridged the chasm: had Lash assess her broken flight-armor, borrowed Silithane's wing-slotted gambeson, took Invisibility + Shield of Faith, and flew a rope across — meeting the trapped Jaxley and helping ferry him to safety.
- Set up the Grabbler ambush with Thaumaturgy tremors as bait; the session ends before she can swing.
Session 24
- The fight's powerhouse: Spirit Guardians (dead-god spirits draining life) carried the Grabbler fight — "World of Warcraft DPS numbers," one turn near 78 damage — backed by Toll the Dead and a Sanctuary on Jaxley. The grappling, fling-happy drones never landed the kill she'd feared.
- Rescued Thalia from the pit with a graceful swan-dive, flying the rope up after a crow and a fishing pole both failed.
- Met the necromancer Gravis and the lost wood-sprout Dee (bonding with him over crackers); read the smugglers' Amulet of Crossed Fists (Religion 29) as a real religious relic of a peace/unarmed faith — opposed to her death domain, and not her quarry.
- Found her quest's target — but can't reach it. Lash's report of a red-candle "temple" and a 14-ft coffin in a flooded tomb matches the dead-gods ruins she came for; lacking Water Breathing for the 5-minute underwater swim, she agrees to save the living first and seek a dry way in. Confirmed ~80–85 years old. Levels to 6.
Session 25
- As a celestial herself, voiced the session's key caution about the prison below: if one of the imprisoned is a more-powerful celestial, it could command her — so she may have to stay clear of the under-cave.
- Joined the Mush Mother's cloud-mind (a stray thought — "I suppose my husband must have liked…" — slipping out), attempted charades with the Mushmother (poorly), and healed Thalia after the gobblers.
- Held her lantern aloft for Spirit Guardians in the gobbler fight (modest rolls, then a clean kill).
- Levels to 6. Her second token Eleanor ("Elenor") surfaces again in table-talk, also distracted by Valmora's "phone-call" staff — nature still unconfirmed.
Session 26
- Cure Wounds the dying wood-creature Gono by the groundwater pool, then flew a roof-inspection (in her under-armor) to confirm the crater predates the cave.
- Stranded with Thalia when the stealth failed; cast Tongues (through a kiss) so the two — and Gono — could talk, and the session's great backstory reveal spilled out: the banished celestial, the knowledge-hoarding shrine, and her 50-year marriage to the Orathi husband whose dying wish she now carries out. Bonds with Gono over their twin 50-year marriages.
- Create Food and Water for the trapped hunter father and son (45 lb / 30 gal). Prays a long prayer for Otto as the Queen takes him.
Session 27
- (Neko's connection dropped repeatedly, so Valmora phased in and out all session.)
- Freed the digging golem. Recognised the tunnelling creature as an enslaved elemental bound to Old Common, knelt, and told it in that tongue: "You are free from the words that bind you." — a release she calls "not too far removed" from her own escape from a controlling society. The golem can only nudge a single rock and keep digging, still compelled to find what its dead masters sent it for.
- Identified the Cursed One's petrification as spell-wrought, not basilisk, and weighed in on the ethics of freeing the Nice One — wary that "evil" may be misunderstood, but the dangerous prisoners must stay caged. As a celestial herself, stayed mindful of the risk a powerful imprisoned celestial could command her.
Session 28
- The cleric's hour. Performed a full funeral for the three strangers crushed by Malifax's meteorite — reorganising the bones, singing a funerary hymn (Religion 29), and casting Ceremony with 25 gold of powdered silver Malifax scooped from his chest. The bones turned to ash, committed to the "Evermind," the collective knowledge of the willing dead.
- Named her faith. Told Malifax she has a close connection with Vanitas and worships the dead (he calls her a follower of "the New Ways," funny for gods older than him) — and earned a lore prize: he identifies one of her lantern amulets as the symbol of the god of restraint / the Sylphites and gives it back to her.
- Talked legacy and remembrance with Malifax ("there is an afterlife, so long as we forge it amongst each other"), and at session's end Sent a message to her dead husband (a different plane; no reply came).
- Distracted all session by the cupboard's forget-object — finding, losing, and re-finding the same item half a dozen times — until Malifax finally tossed it back into his gold chest.
Session 29
- The truth-teller. Cast Zone of Truth to clear the "heist" accusation (after a running gag where she "prepares" the spell for a full nine in-game hours), and Sent the 25-word message to Eldrich the Elder. Revealed her personal ties to him — she performed his family's funeral and knew his late acquaintance, her own dead husband — and that her Speak with Dead could ask if his family lives, but only once a year (recharging in 9 months).
- Sang the council apart. Drafted onto the council and asked to perform, her catastrophic performance check drove Rimulus to quit his immortal existence outright — "I normally do better." Her defence of the Nice One as "misunderstood" prompted Dominus to relinquish the High Seat.
- Was the one about to pull the Shushu's teleport lever while standing on the altar — pulled off it by Fenric the instant before, warned she might not arrive "as herself."
Session 30
- Discovered a third living god. Praying at the under-prison's stripped shrine room (seven pedestals; one space deliberately emptied), her double-20 rolls drew an answer not from a pedestal but from the absence where one was removed. It is a third living god — not her Death Domain patron, not Vanitas, not the Flame Queen — not malicious, but representing something incompatible with life itself, which can only commune with her once she is "removed from existence." A landmark lead for her dead-gods quest ("I collect gods!"), if an unprovable one.
- Exposed the Mad One as the prison's lost therapist (not an inmate), kept alive by the Ambrosia and broken by ages of containment.
- Learned via Tongues the Shushu's name (Gerald) and the prison's history; nearly went to Ponterford over its dying children until Silithane revealed replacement knights were already sent.
- Her flight scale-mail, repaired by Lash, is revealed to be heaven-forged angelic armor — implying Valmora either left heaven or killed someone cast out of it; she pledges Lash a future favor in thanks.
- The driving force behind the party's near-detour to save children — "Why are you here, then?" — repeatedly putting the missing kids of Ponterford above relics and bounties.
Session 31
- The fight's lifeline and tank. Flew above the melee dealing Guiding Bolt, Path to the Grave (vulnerability/double-damage setups for the archers), Toll the Dead, and a Spectral Hand + Spiritual Weapon scythe (inheriting the absent Raphael's spiritual-weapon token), while keeping the party upright with Cure Wounds (37), Mass Healing Word, and Healing Words. Her ~93+ HP let her survive Caressa's Rolling Thunder outright — "that's fucked up that you're still up."
- Turned six feral ghouls to ash. When Malifax's ghouls went feral and lunged at Thalia, she presented her holy symbol and Turned them — all six failed their saves and died (preventing, in the GM's canon, the deaths of two lizardmen).
- Saved the woodlings. Healing-Worded the downed Hobo back at 1 HP and conjured water for the malnourished rescued sprout, reuniting him with his people.
- At the closing gathering she relayed her third living god discovery — "a thing that seeks the end of life" — as proof that more dead gods may yet be hiding, and looked forward to seeing the sun again after so long underground.
Session 33
- Endeared herself to the town. Spent the hour before the sermon ingratiating with the commoners (a Charisma 23), earning the GM's gift of two "this person is my friend" tokens — two pre-made commoner friendships she can claim this session — after passing the time "sitting in a tree."
- Mostly a quiet, social presence this session; chipped into the Renforth shopping spree for +1-AC pants and boots (reaching 22 AC) and weighed in on the tomato and frog-folk problems.
Session 34
- Back at the table (Neko present after sitting out Session 32). In the crocolion fight she ran Guidance, Bless (on Lash, Salamandine and Thalia), repeated Guiding Bolts, and negated a crit on Magra — and was the one to identify the beast's strange spells as a concern, hoping it might be something holy not to be killed (it wasn't).
- Cashed her speakeasy friendship. Revealed that one of her Session 33 "friend tokens" was Abely of the Aberforth Speakeasy, whom she'd met at a private prayer in the witches' church; greeted him warmly as the party arrived to deliver his father's letter.
- Floated using Ceremony to keep the next target (the drake skeleton) from rising, and joked about a spiritual "date" with her dead husband via the dead-gods veil — "she's not going to move on."
Session 35
- Silenced the screaming wyrm. Stayed behind through the rainy night to study the drake skeleton, cast Light on a stone for sight, then Enhance Ability (Charisma) + Dispel Magic at advantage (rolled 18) from 110 ft, dispelling the miscast Animate Objects keeping the limbless bones half-alive. The screaming stopped; she vowed to watch several more nights and to Speak with Dead with the wyrm.
- The druid's confession. A pacifist druid neighbour told her the child-snatcher is dead — killed and buried by a wandering trio weeks ago, their caster having animated the drake bones mid-fight — and pledged his favour if the party stops the lumber mill.
- The backstory reveal. In a late-night talk with Silithane she opened up about her faith and her past: a celestial bound to obey any angel stronger than her, she is a heretic to her sisters and matrons — for marrying (and loving) a human, and for refusing their creed that humanity must be punished for the crimes of the Final Empire. She vows to avoid any other angel the party meets, lest she be commanded against them.
Session 36
- (Reconstructed — no recording exists; see Session 36.) Over the downtime after the owl's dinner she keeps her promised night vigil over the silenced drake skeleton, confirming the bones stay quiet night after night and tending the purification she'd begun — the start of the watch she is still keeping in Session 38 and the bounty she quietly claims by Session 44. Means to Speak with Dead with the wyrm to learn how a limbless draconid came to die in a Ponterford field.
Session 38
- (Neko absent.) Stayed in Ponterford to continue her drake-skeleton purification rather than join the Guardian hunt — leaving the party without a healer for the fight (her Lash-style Lesser Restoration is the established cure for the Guardian's poison, though not its venom). She can top everyone up when they return.
Session 39 (departed)
- Written out of the campaign. Neko did not return, and the GM confirmed at session's end they have stepped away for good — a mix of personal circumstances and a dislike of 5e, not an in-fiction death. Valmora's drake-skeleton purification, her dead-gods quest (the third living god, the Silph relics), and the Caressa/under-cave threads she drove are left to the party to carry or quietly retire.
- An off-screen legacy. The party's win over the Laewendas general Garruk the Red — recounted this session as an angel descending to "name" him before he burst — echoes Valmora's winged, dead-gods iconography, though the killing was credited to a "Blood Witch".
Session 44 (in-fiction farewell)
- Her on-screen send-off. Off-adventuring since Session 39, Valmora is brought back briefly to be written out in-fiction: found at the Ponterford dragon skeleton studying it with a Nordheim picnicker, she had quietly claimed and been paid the drake-skeleton bounty days earlier (the source of the party's confusion with Sheriff Jeremiah).
- Heads north for good. She hands the party their 170-gold cut of the bounty, gives each a hug and a one-minute Guidance, and departs straight north — her lantern's holy symbols have sensed another who has found the death domain, and she means to seek them out (to train them or learn from them). Neko's character run is closed.
