The Land Boat
The party's vehicle: a 15-foot boat-themed carriage built by the gnomish boatwright Gizbump of Fort Foothold — six wheels (rear larger than front), two small sails (a few percent speed either way), interior oars, a hand crank, a hitching chain, a decorative crow's nest (Lash's seat), and a small rear cabin that sleeps two. It genuinely floats: riverworthy (row it, sail it, the wheels just sit there) but not seaworthy. Gizbump wood-carved a dragon figurehead onto the prow unprompted after Draak's 2-gold deposit.
Bought for 50 gold total (Drak 2 + Fenric 15, covering Ashlyn + Silithane 6 + Lash 7 + Thalia 8 + Magra/Drak 12), plus 6 oars (3 free, 3 discounted via Lash's persuasion — discount promptly cancelled by her 2-gold tip; Ashlyn paid the difference). Seating: roughly three benches of three, a single front seat, and the cabin. Drak pulls it by hand — or any beast of burden could, if the party ever buys one.
Session 8
- Purchased at Gizbump's boatery and rolled out of Fort Foothold the same day, Drak hauling, on the road to Ankley — currently carrying ten mail packages including the cake that must not be squashed.
- Lash is already eyeing it as a tinkering project; Tilda-built engines were proposed and tabled.
Session 9
- Official dimensions ruled (Cara's to-scale map): 17.5 feet long, 7.5 feet wide — everyone fits if they squeeze.
- Used as a weapon: Draak (Str 23, raging) spun it overhead and threw it onto six sparring initiates — Thalia dive-bombing aboard mid-flight to save the cake (it survived; so did they, barely). GM ruling: ~3–4d8 improvised damage, ~5-foot range, and it would break against anything genuinely tough ("you break your own boat against them — my boat!").
- Magra shot a small hole in the canopy during the sun-blanket rescue and repaired it with her woodcarver's tools. Parked at the top of Ankley's Thousand Steps overnight (the stairs would destroy it), now also hauling 60 lbs of candy.
Session 10
- First inter-hex flight: carried by Draak through Silithane's "portal" (Feather Fall in an illusion tunnel) from the camp outside Ankley to Ankley Island — technically its first journey off-road, still not its first time in water. "Boat needs rest" was Drak's position throughout.
- Now shares the island beach with 2–3 captured pirate rowboats; the loot chest of 165-gold assorted treasure rides in the hold for the sail back to Fort Foothold.
Session 21
- Stays with the party after Draak (its founder and usual hauler) leaves — the group bought it collectively, so it's shared property.
- Pulled by hand out of Gwyndinas (a comedic sight to the locals of New Neaton and Keraford) until Lash tames the salamander Squishy to pull it; then hitched into Eldrich the Elder's caravan for the road beyond the Palisade.
