Kain
Kain the Blessed · Player: Ryan · Member of The Shattered Coin
A Blessed of the Firebrand Church — born a conduit of the All-Flame Queen
(roughly one in eight hundred children), raised from childhood in the ways of flame.
Speaks of serving the Queen "for centuries"; recruits constantly. Rage-fueled melee
with fire: flaming hands, fire damage on crits. As a Blessed he can perform the
church's ceremonies, including branding.
Session 3
- Crit a deserter clean through an interior wall (16+1 fire) — killed him; torched the
bed-frame mimic. - Became "business partners" with mayor Ledge; signed a charity contract to
identify what Orathos needs (15 crates/ship, no profit). - Watched The Flamespeaker brand the greedy nobles he'd lured to church;
firebolted cursed seagulls off the church roof like a minigame. - Tender "dogs through a fence" hand-to-glass moment with squatter Mikey — then set
the hand on fire.
Session 4
- Recruited a cowardly gladiator and his "mindless" wife into the church; lectured
Silithane on the All-Flame Queen for 15 minutes (Silithane sensed Kain is no
mere Branded — "he's got to be something else"). - Gave little Goopo Jr. a boot to live in, then faked being KO'd by the boy's
boot-kick (pretend self-immolation included) — convincing the kid he's far more
powerful than he is. - Pulled the middle lever to free Handsome Jane; when Goopo Jr.'s lever-kicking
released Laila instead, Kain offered her the unconscious jailer as a sacrifice
(declined). Restored the kitchen's lights afterward. - Slept at the church (weekly teeth cleaning); arranged Warbrand faith-healing for
the battered Magra after sermons.
Session 5
- Performed a 2 AM dwarven wedding (25-gp ceremony); attacked the Mage's Society
elder with firebolts (all counterspelled) and was banished 2 minutes to a
bouncy-castle punishment demiplane — which he burned to ash and counted as a win. - Unmasked Silithane's fake Flame Queen voice in his head ("You're a phony");
tasked by the High Sun with teaching him the value of honesty. Was scammed of
5 gold by a doppelganger impersonating Lurch. - Aboard ship: fought a table with hands alongside Pam (pulled groin), learned of
the super-soldier statue, was adopted by Ugo the hippo-man, cooked Eggs
Benedict well enough that the chef wants him all 21 days, and won statue-hold
clearance: "the Blessed may enter... with up to 6 idiots." - The rift widens: "You six idiots have caused me more grief than I've ever had" —
but he still refused to believe Magra is bigger than Daewynn even seeing
them side by side.
Session 6
- Interrogated about his race after claiming "Human, but not a human. None of your
business" — the party learned he can see in the dark ("I've been using fire the
whole time" — he hasn't) and smells of fresh ash; verdict inconclusive. - Hails from Pinwy in Rivalon (pronunciation an eternal table dispute); voted
for settlement spots and unnamed settlements to claim ("It's all ours, baby"). - Boomed "IDIOTS ASSEMBLE" via thaumaturgy and led the party below — missed the fire
ceremony by 2 minutes; midwifed Gravis's acceptance of necromancy ("I'm proud
of you too, Gravis") and talked the dark-elf spirit-cager into moving his cages via
square-footage math. - Hired on as Jugs's cauldron-heater: negotiated 3 gp/day plus a ceremony day off
by holding Burning Hands under the product. Took 1 psychic damage listening to
Sir Conolith; helped the blind "Fire Eyes" man to the bathroom.
Session 7
- Kain dies — on-screen. At the Firebrand Church fire ceremony, Flamespeaker Nina invited a self-sacrifice and Kain was already at
the front of the queue. He accepted a sacrifice "complete of body and soul," muttered
"maybe now you'll recognize her power," and climbed into the left furnace — turning
instantly to dust and ash as his soul flew into the statue's hand. - Out of the flame stepped a fully-grown lizardman: Draak. Nina's blessing —
"Welcome, child born of the Flame Queen, sacrifice of Kain and body" — frames it as
Kain being a sacrifice to create something new, not a transformation; Thalia
and the GM both ruled it permanent. - He left behind 26 coins (now held by Magra for Drak) and a bag of iron
teeth (claimed by Lash). Lash waited by the statue's far
side like a dog for him to "come out the back."
Session 8
- Kain is gone. The party's explanations to Brebo Goldfang contradict each
other: "Kain kind of died and then this guy became Kain... I don't know, he didn't
die" (Ashlyn); "You stepped into a fire and turned into ash... he went to the
Flame Queen priestess" (Lash). - The GM still keeps Kain's character sheet "hidden somewhere"; his 26 gold went
into the pot for Drak (Magra holds it). How the party explains his absence is the
lingering thread.
Character Sheet (mechanics)
In-play co-pilot sheet, transcript-mined; no authoritative numeric sheet exists in the sources (the GM kept Kain's sheet "hidden", Session 08). Values below are stated in play or drawn from the session notes (which cite sessions); anything not observed is marked unknown. Kain is a RETIRED PC — he sacrificed himself on-screen at the fire ceremony in Session 07 and became the lizardman Draak; this sheet covers his active run, Session 03–Session 07.
Identity
- Role/title: a Blessed of the Firebrand Church — a born conduit of the All-Flame Queen (roughly one in eight hundred children), raised from childhood in the ways of flame. "Blessed" is a religious station, not a mechanical class; as a Blessed he may perform the church's ceremonies, including branding and weddings (a 25-gp 2 AM dwarven wedding, Session 05).
- Class/subclass: unknown as a formal class line — never named in the sources, and "Blessed/Branded" does not appear in the DM Companion class table. Played as a rage-fuelled fire melee combatant: he rages (confirmed "my rage", Session 03) and casts fire magic (see Abilities). Mechanically reads as a Barbarian-style rager fused with fire spellcasting (cf. the Companion's STR&CON "Barbarian" and CON&STR "Harbinger — Damage, More Damage" rows,
dm_companion.txt:144/:158), but no source confirms which. - Species: ambiguous / unknown. Claims "Human, but not a human. None of your business" (Session 06). The party's investigation was inconclusive: his features "check out human," but he can see in the dark ("I've been using fire the whole time" — "Nope") and smells of fresh ash / recently-burned firewood (Session 06). Silithane sensed he's "no mere Branded — he's got to be something else" (Session 04).
- Origin: hails from Pinwy in Rivalon (pronunciation a running table dispute), Session 06. Speaks of serving the All-Flame Queen "for centuries." Adoptive father is a hippo-person; the hippo-man engineer Ugo claimed him as kin aboard ship (Session 05).
- Player: Ryan. Member of The Shattered Coin.
Combat stats
- AC: unknown — never stated as a number.
- Max HP: unknown — never stated. (Took 1 psychic damage from prolonged exposure to Sir Conolith, Session 06; took 2 from a thrown burning mimic after rage halved it, Session 03 — no totals given.)
- Ability scores / saves / initiative / attack & damage bonuses: unknown — none ever announced as numbers. Strength implied by melee; a crit through an interior wall dealt 16 + 1 fire (Session 03).
- Level: unknown — never stated numerically. (The party's "level 3" milestone referenced at the island, Session 07, is a crafting tier, not his character level.)
- Damage resistance (while raging): halves incoming damage — a thrown burning mimic was reduced to 2 (Session 03).
Abilities / signature moves
- Rage (barbarian-style) — confirmed in play ("checking my rage had nothing to do with it… a Dex save, right?", Session 03); grants the damage halving above.
- Fire damage on crits — his critical hits add +1 fire; a crit blew a deserter clean through an interior wall, killing him (Session 03). He also torched the bed-frame mimic (mimics take double from fire/area effects), Session 03.
- Burning Hands — held under Jugs's drug cauldron to negotiate his wage ("are you sure I'm fired?"), Session 06; used as his fire-melee staple.
- Firebolt / Fire Bolt (cantrip) — knocked cursed seagulls off the church roof "like a minigame" (Session 03); thrown at Silithane and the old Mage's Society elder (all counterspelled) and at the animated table, Session 05.
- Thaumaturgy — boomed "IDIOTS ASSEMBLE" through the ship to summon the party below (Session 06).
- Hellish Rebuke — attempted on a handshake; disallowed as it wasn't an attack (Session 05). Whether otherwise available is to confirm.
- Blessed ceremonies — can brand new converts and perform church rites (weddings, sermons, faith-healing referrals); recruits constantly for the Firebrand Church (Session 03–Session 06).
- Darkvision — sees in the dark, a trait that fuelled the "is Kain human?" debate (Session 06).
Gear
- Flail — drawn on the Mage's Society elder (Session 05); his named melee weapon.
- A flaming sword — landed a hit on the animated table aboard ship (Session 05); whether a distinct weapon or his fire applied to a blade is unclear.
- Wages earned (ship jobs): cauldron-heater for Jugs at 3 gp/day + one ceremony day off (Session 06); paid 3 gp 5 sp in final wages (Session 07); a silver from the ship's chef for Eggs Benedict (Session 05); scammed of 5 gold by a Lurch doppelganger (Session 05).
- No notable magic items retained on death. (The cursed War Machine Club and a survival ring went to others; Kain gave away his one huge boot to Goopo Jr., Session 04.)
- Left behind at death: 26 coins (held by Magra for Draak; rendered as 27 in Session 08) and a bag of iron teeth (claimed by Lash for smithing), Session 07.
Status
- RETIRED — died on-screen (Session 07). At the Firebrand Church fire ceremony, Flamespeaker Nina invited a self-sacrifice; Kain stepped to the front, accepted a sacrifice "complete of body and soul," muttered "maybe now you'll recognize her power," and climbed into the left furnace — turning instantly to dust and ash as his soul flew into the statue's hand.
- Out of the flame stepped a fully-grown lizardman, Draak (Ryan's new PC). Per Nina's blessing, Kain was a sacrifice to create something new, not a transformation; Thalia and the GM both ruled it permanent (Session 07).
- The GM still keeps Kain's character sheet hidden and unrevealed; the party's accounts of his fate openly contradict one another (Session 08).
SUMMARY: Kain the Blessed (Ryan), a retired rage+fire melee PC — rage, Burning Hands, Fire Bolt, fire-on-crit and Blessed ceremonies confirmed, but class, level, AC, HP and ability scores all unknown; sacrificed himself in Session 07 to become Draak.
