The Autarch

The elven woman who killed the God-Emperor — and the reason the current era is
called the fourth. She is not a myth, not a title held by many, and not dead: she has
been sighted repeatedly across the fourteen centuries since, most recently about a hundred
years before the party's own present.

(Name confirmed Autarch per a DM ruling, 2026-07-26 — the vault previously spelled it
"Autark" throughout. See Canon Questions.)

What she did

In the third era, a human supremacist known as the God-Emperor
killed every god in the world and declared himself the only one remaining — the
Firebrand Church's All-Flame Queen survived solely by hiding. The Autarch armed herself
with a green shard — the substance the Foredwellers refined, the
Shard of the Autarch that now bears her name — walked up to him, and stabbed him.
He exploded. His leaderless empire (~300,000 years by the Session 19 telling) collapsed
with him.

His death rolled the calendar. Third Era ended; Fourth Era year 0 is the moment she
killed him. That makes her, in the most literal sense available, the person the current
age is measured from — and the party's own date of 4E 1396 counts the years since she
put a knife in a god.

Sightings since

She surfaces rarely, and always for something enormous:

• Late 1200s — she killed a tyrant dragon that had enslaved a micronation.
• Early 1300s — she fought "some kind of sea-beast" at Komorin, Varickshire,
  during a blood moon.

Both are new to the vault as of the DM's 2026-07-26 post; neither Komorin, Varickshire, nor
the blood moon appears anywhere in Sessions 03–52. The later sighting puts her roughly
a century before the present — she is a living contemporary, not a founding legend.

Why she matters now

The party has found one source of her power: the refined green "panache" on the
gemologist Anita's desk in The Foredweller Research Facility (Session 52) — the same
substance that is both the immortality elixir and the god-slaying Shard. The DM
has put an explicit, optional offer on the table: steal it and mainline it. See

The terms make her an active threat rather than background lore. "The Autarch becomes
hostile. She knows." Take her power and, at the end of every long rest, there is a 1-in-100
chance she arrives in person to take it back — a being who has killed a god, a tyrant
dragon, and a sea-beast.

Her reservoir (Session 53)

The party has now seen where the power comes from. Behind two sets of doors and a
rebreather mask, The Foredweller Research Facility guards a communal pool of hundreds
of gallons of liquid panache, topped up one drop every ten to twenty minutes by machinery
that has been running for several hundred thousand years. Its masked keeper, Malaika,
tells the story as scripture: 1,396 years ago the Autarch put "a piece of green glass"
into the neck of the man who had killed the gods and chained every beast-person, and "we
should protect it for her until she needs it." The hundred-odd loose shards scattered across the world, one of them sometimes turned up by a child digging in beach sand, are not part of her telling — that is Dr. Xiao Li, out in the corridor afterwards, once Malaika had sealed the door behind them.

Two things follow that the vault didn't have before:

• The supply is finite and locatable. The GM allows that draining the reservoir might
  technically kill her — "unless there's other reserves like this somewhere else, which
  is an unknown" — and that stealing anything less brings her in person "in like 10
  seconds." Malaika's framing has her as the world's absent guardian, but the Superman line is the GM's own, weighing what the party would be doing: take the lot and "you've killed the Autarch, and now the world doesn't have like its Superman."
• The timeline doesn't fit her. Dr. Xiao Li asks the question nobody can answer:
  "if The Autarch was first perceived 1,390 years ago, why the machinery that creates the
  power she uses is 500,000 years old? Is she that old? Has she stolen this power in the
  same way that you could have?" The obvious reading is that the Autarch did exactly what
  the DM just offered the party — walked into a Foredweller ruin and took it.

Open questions

• Who is she? The party has guessed Euphemia Fayeth (Session 47), but that rests
  only on Euphemia being a fearsome elven-blooded mage — and the DM says elven, while
  Euphemia is half-elven. Unconfirmed either way.
• What is she to the Foredwellers? She used their craft to kill a god. Whether she was
  one of them, allied to them, or simply took the shard is unstated — and the deal's terms
  treat "the Autarch" and "the Aelders" as two separate parties who would both come for a
  thief.
• How is she still alive? Elves are long-lived, but ~1,400 years is not ordinary elven
  lifespan. Whether she drank the panache herself — the substance that grants immortality
  as readily as it kills gods — is unasked and unanswered.
