The Penway Hat Man
What — Humanoid specialist agent under Laewendas; a "boogeyman of Rivalon" operating out of the Snatcher's Cave. Tall figure in a buckled top hat and strapped straitjacket-coat, like a stage escape artist.
Threat — High. Rusty rates him one of the cave's two single greatest threats alongside Hunt (Session 41); his "hat-nap" removes a target from the fight permanently. Gap: never fought — no AC/HP/save DCs/damage observed.
Observed abilities — None seen in play. Everything below is rumor/briefing, not witnessed:
- Rumored self-teleport: can put himself inside his own hat and reappear elsewhere (Session 40, Session 41).
- Rumored "hat-nap": stores a living victim inside the hat and carries them off to be sacrificed at the shrine (Session 40).
- Rumored thrown weapon: the hat is sharp-edged and weighted "like a man," usable as a thrown weapon (Session 41, per Rusty).
Resistances / immunities / weaknesses — None observed. In Session 40 Lash saw him bleeding and sewing a damaged sleeve from a recent mission — so he can be wounded.
Tactics & behavior — Calm, methodical, treats injury as a cost of doing business. Party's standing tactical priority (from Rusty, Session 41): do not get pulled into the hat — nothing that goes in comes back out except him; and if he's killed, secure the hat before sleep, as another Hat Man may crawl out of it overnight. Gap: no observed trigger for fleeing/surrender; no stated reaction to Fenric or spellbreakers.
Disposition to the party — Hostile (enemy faction), but unaware of the party so far. In Session 40 Lash scouted him invisibly from the underground river; he never detected her. No direct contact yet.
Status — At large. Last seen Session 40 at the tea party in the Snatcher's Cave, resting and repairing his coat.
