The Grabber
What — A "beast with too many hands": a creature built from ~100 grafted human hands fused into one blind, writhing mass (locally "the Grabbler" / Grappler), lurking in Gray Veil Cave. Bounty target (100 gold) the party hunted Session 22.
Threat — Moderate, spiking to deadly. Ordinary specimens are clumsy; the intelligent "Angry Grabber" was deadly — it grappled, flung a PC down the pit, and nearly redirected attacks back onto allies Session 24.
Observed abilities
- Grabble (grapple) — melee attack to grapple a target; on a hit, can fling the victim across the battlefield. The intelligent one grappled Thalia and hurled her ~50 ft into the pit Session 24.
- Multiattack (intelligent specimen) — surged for 4 attacks on one target; two hits dealt 7 + 9 = 16 bludgeoning Session 24.
- "Point" / redirect — designates a target (Magra); attacks and even spells aimed nearby risk being pulled toward the pointed ally. Nearly redirected Spirit Guardians Session 24.
- Crush — hands crush a tossed boulder to dust Session 23.
- "Deep tissue massage" — signature strike, 3d20+20 piercing, Con save to halve. (Not seen rolled in play — verify.)
Resistances / immunities / weaknesses
- Blind, no visible eyes; detects prey by air vibration — silence is the best defense (in play it tracked thrown pebbles by sound/movement Session 23).
- Cannot climb ladders and dislikes swimming — terrain denies it Session 24.
- Took caltrop damage walking on its hand-feet (1 piercing each) Session 24; shredded by Spirit Guardians Session 24.
- Can itself be restrained/Entangled, shutting it down Session 24.
- No resistances or immunities observed.
Tactics & behavior — Skitters and climbs along cave walls; the intelligent one ascends to high ground, grapples, then flings victims into the pit and "points" to make the party fear hitting allies — it "outplayed" them. Mindless specimens just close and grab. They drag the dead to the Queen's bone-piled boulder; victims' hands are stripped to build new Grabblers. No fleeing or surrender observed. (No fear of Fenric/spellbreakers seen.)
Disposition to the party — Hostile. Pure predators; the party hunted them for bounty.
Status — Dead. Three specimens (including the intelligent "Angry Grabber") killed in Gray Veil Cave Session 24. Note: the singular bounty "Grabber" proved to be the Grappler Queen (Caressa) — "100 hands make a Grabber, 100 Grabbers make a queen" — defeated and re-imprisoned Session 31.
Reframed as a void thing (Session 55) — the grafting-gland symbiote behind Caressa is now one of only two void-adjacent entities the party has met, alongside the thing inside the Void Stone. The GM's own note on the pair: they "doesn't not resemble" each other — one fleshy and tangible, one shadowy and ethereal, but "the colour schemes and the textures and the amount of eyes… these things seem to be of the same brand of family." Both came from space. Held up to the shard, the jarred symbiote retreated to the far side of its jar. Four of the party voted to destroy the two jars on the spot; Lash refused, arguing that the Gray Veil dead were Caressa's doing and not the symbiote's — "she wanted to be hugged and she got all those hands" — and they are still in her pack.
SUMMARY: Blind hand-monster; grapples and flings; three killed Session 24, Queen defeated Session 31.
