The Candleman
What — Gaunt, hooded humanoid (almost-undead, "leaning toward lichdom" but not there yet); living focus/avatar of the lifespan-stealing shrine in The Snatcher's Cave, tied to a dead or demi-god. Affiliated with Laewendas's cave operation.
Threat — Unknown / do-not-engage. Never observed in combat. In-world warnings rate him as the avatar of a demigod-class force "that cannot be reckoned with" (Session 41); Pimothy and Rusty both advise the party not to attack the representative of a god (Session 42). No stat block has ever been seen.
Observed abilities — (no combat actions seen; all effects are ambient/ritual)
- The shrine bargain — killing a creature on his altar grants the killer a sliver of the victim's unliven years; the statue/demigod takes the majority (Session 41). Per Fenric's Arcana 21, you must kill a creature of your own type (humanoid kills humanoid), and the slain soul may be bound into a Candle of Torment at the Candleman's whim (Session 42).
- Hidden second bargain — the act of killing also takes "something" from the killer; even Rusty, who can sense the magic flow, does not know its terms (Session 41).
- Eye-contact transmission — locking eyes makes the viewer wordlessly understand the deal's full terms; the room flickers (Session 44). He beckons watchers — "yes, come on over" — strongly enough that the camp's own guard avoids his corridor (Session 43).
- No senses while dormant — did not breathe, blink, or register Fenric's invisible scout (Session 40); his candle gutters when his sarcophagi are disturbed (Session 44).
Resistances / immunities / weaknesses — None observed. (Gap: no save DCs, AC, HP, damage, or resistances ever rolled — he has never been fought or scanned for stats. Thalia's Primeval Awareness only returned a demigod-class signal interfering with the readout, Session 41.)
Tactics & behavior — Statue-still, holds his candle, "purpose is to do nothing more than to hold the candle" (Session 44). Never leaves the shrine; never attacks unless attacked (Pimothy, Session 42). Whether he fears Fenric or spellbreakers is unknown — never provoked. Pimothy argues for sealing the shrine over destroying it, fearing unpredictable consequences from attacking something god-linked.
Disposition to the party — Neutral / passive. Repeatedly scouted, browsed, and bypassed across Sessions 40–44; the party deliberately refuses to engage him or use the shrine. No hostility on either side to date.
Status — At large, shrine left standing and untouched; last seen Session 44 (party opened a sarcophagus revealing thousands of soul-candles, then sealed it with a "No entry" sign and left).
SUMMARY: Passive demigod-avatar of a kill-for-lifespan shrine; never fought; no stats.
