Varg Ralagrak Gro-Algrag
The elder orc who presides over The Orc Hunting Lodge in Ponterford — an ancient, fire-scarred veteran old enough to remember the realm before Laewendas, and likely a fighter in the war that put her in power (on which side he does not say). His face carries the story of a hundred fights: weapon scars, a great clawed gash, and burn damage that leaves one side of his head bald. He wears a simple, battle-scarred leather hauberk and a little red scarf. As the lodge's eldest he never cleans his own bowl — everyone else lives rent-free on the understanding that they clean up after him. The moment he learns half-orc Magra is with the party he treats her as his own daughter, and opens the lodge's food, mead, and war-gear freely to all friends of orcs. Carries the one long unique name of an orc with no surname.
(Heard as "Varg Ralagrak Gro-Algrag," and garbled many ways at the table — "Gragragrach," "Rirgagra Algor," etc. It is also spelled "Varg'ralagrak-gro'alrgrag." Current display follows the vault convention.)
Session 37 (debut)
- The quest-giver. Sat eating in the lodge, he will only charge the party to slay the Beast of the Woods (5–8 miles north) once Magra says — and means — the words "I wish to slay the Beast of the Woods." He refuses to send any orc to fight who does not truly wish it.
- Laments the lodge is light on warriors after the rebellion — "a medicine maker, a child, and he who builds muscles for show, not for war" (the last said loudly enough to drive the door-guard Bor-Grogus to quietly shut the door on himself).
- Tested Lash before allowing the "birthday child" along: had her strike his upturned palm with her hammer (11 damage — good weight), revealing his flat damage reduction (he took only 3). Bluntly forbade her bringing Salamandine, who would blister and burst on the beast's venom.
- Handed out mead all round and marched out at the party's side toward the woods.
Later
- Session 38: Marches on the hunt with dual axes and a blind battle-frenzy; the war-band sets out for the venom sac that can cure the lodge's dying patient (and, by then, the poisoned Silithane and Warmaiden Yngraf).
- Session 39: Back at the lodge after the Guardian is slain; the honour-bound orcs take no reward, and Varg dumps the trophy-parts in storage, shoulder-checking the display-guard Bor-Grogus on his way in. Last seen here.
