Silvered Short Sword
Fenric's old short sword (lent to Silithane back in The Urina), silvered
edge-to-edge by Lash at her relocated shipboard smelter — her first
solo silvering. Green (uncommon), +95 gp value, rebalanced toward the hilt for
Silithane's frame. One microscopic speck of unfused silver on the off-edge that only
Lash will ever notice ("I wish I'd just done 5% better" — she means to fix it).
Session 6
- Forged over 8 hours aboard The Expedition Ship using the silver ingot from
Lash's Session 5 shopping spree; chosen as a simple weapon "everybody can use." - Carried by Silithane.
- The silvering doubled as a reminder that silver harms vampires (Ashlyn now
keeps clear of the blade) — foreshadowing its later worth against more than ghosts. - Pending experiment: Thalia and Laila want it tested on one of the dark
elf's caged sea-spirits — if silver bites ghosts, it's a weapon against Laila's
daily assassins. Nobody has told Silithane yet.
Session 7
- The experiment finally ran. Silithane thrust the blade into a closed,
silver-lined ghost cage (a 21 "hit" that met no resistance, nearly overbalancing him)
and a caged sea-spirit perished in a flicker of dust — confirming a silvered weapon
harms ghosts (marginally less than pure silver, but still effective). The kill left
behind a flask of ectoplasm (Thalia kept it). - Significance: this is the proof-of-concept that the party (and Laila) needed against
her spectral assassins. The dark-elf ghost-catcher noted the only alternative is an
ordinary weapon laced with Firebrand-made holy-oil substitute.
Session 13
- Decisive against the grief demon beneath the Clapton's Hammer: every non-silver weapon failed to make the kill stick, but Draak grabbed this blade (wielding it like a club) and the silver dealt double damage, dropping the demon and freeing the inn. Confirms silver bites demons too, not just ghosts and vampires.
- Fenric had been carrying it into the basement (lent by Silithane for the expected fight); the party spent half the combat shouting at people to use the silver sword.
Session 55 — reforged into a +1 silvered longsword
- Stolen, then returned better. Silithane woke on the 23rd of New Summer to find the short sword gone from his kit and was told to delete it off his sheet. Lash had taken it in the night; hours later she came tromping down the stairs, tripped flat on her face still holding it up, and handed back a +1 silvered longsword. "It's better than what it was before. I know we just got a fancy new dragon-slaying short sword, but in case you want something a little bit tougher and still silvered."
- Built for his hands. "It's a little bit harder than a short sword, but it's balanced so that you should be able to use it like it is a short sword — but it is longer, you know." Forty-nine sessions on from her first solo silvering aboard The Expedition Ship, the same blade is still his.
- First blood. Opened with Booming Blade and a Sneak Attack against the Morkid at the mouth of the north tunnel and crit — 38 damage, then maximum damage on the crit sneak for 50. The GM: "it's the perfect weapon for you. It's bonded to your soul, it's made especially by Lash."
- In exchange Silithane asked to be taught to smith. Lash offered the only version she has time for — he can watch her work at night and be yapped at while she does it, which suits a man who barely sleeps.
