Mush Mother
An ancient, peaceful fungal matriarch living in a bioluminescent chamber of the Grey Vale Cave — the sole survivor of what was once a village of mushroom people ("there used to be more of us"). Faceless and mouthless, she communicates telepathically by offering a small symbiosis-mushroom: eating it links the eater into a temporary spore cloud-mind (and dilates the pupils to see in the dark). Non-violent to her core — squeamish even at her guests' violent thoughts — she reproduces asexually (needing only "space, darkness, nutrients") and has taken in the wood-folk's lost, faceless children, whom she shelters but cannot grant faces or growth.
She is a profound lore-keeper: "we have been here since the dawn of time… before the cave had a surface, before the water, before the monster."
Session 25
- Befriended by Thalia (who eats the symbiosis-mushroom; Valmora, Jex, Fenric and Magra join the cloud-mind), warm and hospitable, offering food, water and shelter.
- Cave history, from one who saw it: the Under-Under Cave was first dug by scaled, spiny, clawed men — two of them huge "leaders" — who hauled in boxes (one Lash-sized, the rest Silithane-sized) and never left; later, city-builders in fine clothes with hammers came, burned rock and built underground — but most were already dead going in (her spores couldn't connect to them): an undead civilization below. She knows nothing of a "prison."
- Warns of the noise-hunting gobblers next door (they have killed her people); after the party clears them, she reclaims her water chamber and blesses the group, hoping her faceless children can someday be escorted to the Woodling Den.
Session 31
- The surprise powerhouse of the Queen fight. When the GM ran the allied skirmishes, the peaceful Mushroom Mother fist-fought her assigned Grabbler and killed it in three rounds — "of all the people I thought wouldn't do fine… she just fucked this guy up" — then charged toward the Queen herself, the dying Skeleton Knight riding her back and swinging down at the drones.
- Conversed with the subdued Caressa. Once the Queen surrendered, the Mushroom Mother knelt beside her and fungal-spawn mind-linked with her — a quiet exchange between the cave's two ancient matriarchs.
